Title: Biohazard Pdf The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapons Program in the World--Told from the Inside by the Man Who Ran It
For fifty years, while the world stood in terror of a nuclear war, Russian scientists hidden in heavily guarded secret cities refined and stockpiled a new kind of weapon of mass destruction—an invisible weapon that would strike in silence and could not be traced. It would leave hundreds of thousands dead in its wake and would continue to spread devastation long after its release. The scientists were bioweaponeers, working to perfect the tools of a biological Armageddon. They called it their Manhattan Project. It was the deadliest and darkest secret of the cold war.
What you are about to read has never before been made public. Ken Alibek began his career as a doctor wanting to save lives and ended up running the Soviet biological weapons program—a secret military empire masquerading as a pharmaceutical company. At its peak, the program employed sixty thousand people at over one hundred facilities. Seven reserve mobilization plants were on permanent standby, ready to produce hundreds of tons of plague, anthrax, smallpox, and Venezuelan equine encephalitis, to name only a few of the toxic agents bred in Soviet labs. Almost every government ministry was implicated, including the Academy of Sciences and the KGB.
Biohazard is a terrifying, fast-paced account of tests and leaks, accidents and disasters in the labs, KGB threats and assassinations. The book is full of revelations—evidence of biowarfare programs in Cuba and India, actual deployments at Stalingrad and in Afghanistan, experiments with mood-altering agents, a contingency plan to attack major American cities, and the true story behind the mysterious anthrax outbreak in Sverdlovsk. But beyond these is a twisted world of lies and mirrors, and the riveting parable of the greatest perversion of science in history.
No one knows the actual capabilities of biological weapons better than Dr. Alibek. Many of the scientists who worked with him have been lured away from low-paying Russian labs to rogue regimes and terrorist groups around the world. In our lifetime, we will most likely see a terrorist attack using biological weapons on an American city. Biohazard tells us—in chilling detail—what to expect and what we can do. Not since Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon has there been such a book—a report from inside the belly of the beast.
Praise for Biohazard
“Harrowing . . . richly descriptive . . . [an] absorbing account.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Remarkable . . . terrifying revelations . . . [Ken Alibek’s] overall message is ignored at great national peril.”—Newsday
“Read and be amazed. . . . An important and fascinating look into a terrifying world of which we were blissfully unaware.”—Robin Cook, author of Contagion
Excellent biography, giving the perfect amount of info without losing the reader An incredible look into the Soviet bioweapons program, written by a man who helped lead it for many years before defecting to the US. The book goes through his entrance into the secret program and the various biological weapons that they developed during his time.I found most incredible his discussions regarding the interaction of the Russians and Americans in regards to their bioweapons abilities. When he toured the American production plants (which were all shut down by President Nixon), he realized for the first time that the Americans were holding true to their end of the bargain, something not being done by the Soviets. You can see through the end of the book how this experience changed his outlook, eventually leading to his defection.Although throughout the book he does go into specifics regarding the weapons developed, it did not become too monotonous for someone without a chemistry/biology background, and gave the perfect amount of info without losing the reader. My only complaint is that sometimes it felt like he skipped back and forth along the timeline, though this was only a minor grievance and did not detract from the book too greatly.A little dry, but hey, he's a Russian ... A little dry, but hey, he's a Russian scientist, not a novelist. Autobiographical stuff to hold the story together, but not too much to detract from the subject. Scary! Marburg, Ebola, Anthrax, Bubonic Plague, Botulism, Smallpox, various other bacteria, viruses, genetically engineered to be resistant to treatment drugs, all weaponized in an aerosol form and tested as payloads on missiles (poor monkeys). Look at the current natural Ebola outbreak in Africa with several countries and hundreds of victims now involved. Imagine an attack on a city where thousands would be infected in the initial attack, then hundreds of thousands dead before containment. The USSR and later Russia had a serious production line going, not just experiments. And the U.S. "experts" keep saying that it was is possible to achieve such a result. Maybe they just didn't want us to be afraid.Required reading for any person living on this planet that breathes. This is one of those extremely rare books that I will be recommending as a MUST READ book to every person who ever asks me... "What book would you recommend be on EVERY person's reading list?" If I could give it a gazillion stars, I would! Yes, it's that well written. This book will scare the livin' daylights out of you. For anyone living under the illusion that the world is a super safe place and that our governments are doing everything they can to keep us safe. This book will open your eyes to the reality of the real world."Biohazard" truly is a chilling TRUE tale of one man's life in the USSR who tells how he headed up the biological weapons program to kill off every person on the planet.. to kill off every plant that might grow.. to just kill. The diseases that they spliced together will leave me with nightmares for the rest of my life. The end is near.. and it will only take one madman or disaster to open this genie's bottle.A MUST READ. A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR EVERY BOOK SHELF IN THE WORLD!
