Jack might be the only kid in the world who's dreading summer. But he's got a good reason: summer is when his single mom takes a second job and leaves him at home to watch his autistic kid sister, Maddy. It's a lot of responsibility, and it's boring, too, because Maddy doesn't talk. Ever. But then, one day at the flea market, Maddy does talk―to tell Jack to trade their mom's car for a box of mysterious seeds. It's the best mistake Jack has ever made.
In Mighty Jack, what starts as a normal little garden out back behind the house quickly grows up into a wild, magical jungle with tiny onion babies running amok, huge, pink pumpkins that bite, and, on one moonlit night that changes everything…a dragon.
Not Zita After we thoroughly enjoyed Hatke's three Zita the Spacegirl girl books, my eight year old grandson and I were eager to share reading Mighty Jack. He was less than enthralled by the book's storyline, but we plowed through it. There's great artwork and plenty of mood and atmosphere but not much story to this book, which leaves you meandering rather than cliff hanging. It seemed little more than a lengthy prelude to the second volume.Spectacular as always My 5yr old son and I have everything by Mr. Hatke. He gets so excited when a character from another series appears in a different series (even if only a cameo). These are the kids of works that shape childhoods & memories of bedtime stories.Graphic novel lovers will love this one Graphic novel lovers will love this one! A spin of Jack & the Beanstalk but SO much better! Jack and his sister get their hands on some magic seeds and well, the magical adventure starts there! My 4th grade students love this book. Mighty Jack ends with a cliffhanger and we've anxiously awaited the sequel, Mighty Jack and the Goblin King, which is out now!
